Quarry Bay's Hidden History?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week, excited to explore! I've heard whispers of old smuggling routes and forgotten tunnels hidden beneath the modern skyscrapers. Anyone know any good local historia… more

That's awesome! Quarry Bay has a lot more to it than meets the eye. Forget pirate treasure (though, wouldn't that be amazing?!), but the smuggling history is legit. You're unlikely to find officially sanctioned "historical tours" focusing on that specific angle; it's more of an underground thing. Try searching for local history societies in Hongkong – they might have some contacts or know of individuals who’ve researched the area's less-than-savory past. Failing that, hitting up some of the older, more established pubs in Quarry Bay might be your best bet. Locals are often a goldmine for this kind of info. Buy a few rounds, be friendly, and listen carefully – you might be surprised what you hear! Good luck!

That’s incredible! I hadn't even considered the smuggling aspect – pirate treasure would have been fun, though. Pub crawls are definitely on the cards now, sounds like a much better way to uncover some juicy history than stuffy old historical societies. Cheers for the tip!

Hung Hom's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Hung Hom

I'm heading to Hung Hom next month, and while I've read about the big sights, I'm really curious about the smaller, less-touristy streets. Are there any particularly charming or interesting little al… more

Hung Hom's got some cool pockets, yeah. Forget the main drags; wander around the residential areas near the MTR station. You'll find tiny dai pai dongs tucked away – some are seriously old school. Don't expect fancy menus; it's all about the local vibe. Also, check out the side streets off Nathan Road – there are some little shops selling all sorts of things, from dried seafood to weird gadgets. You might even stumble across a traditional Chinese medicine shop... those places are always fascinating. And honestly, just get lost a bit! That's how you find the real gems. Happy exploring!

That's awesome advice! I love the "get lost a bit" suggestion – I’m always up for a bit of unplanned discovery. Dried seafood and weird gadgets… sounds perfect. Thanks! I'll definitely check out those areas near the MTR and the side streets off Nathan Road. Any idea if those dai pai dongs are open late? I'm hoping to explore after work.
