Caritas Bianchi Lodge Question

fmd_good Caritas Bianchi Lodge

So, I'm heading to Caritas Bianchi Lodge in a few weeks for a solo backpacking trip. I've read it's a bit out of the way, nestled in the hills above the city. My question is: how easy is it to get ar… more

Caritas Bianchi Lodge is pretty secluded, yeah. Getting around without constantly forking out for taxis is totally doable though. You'll mostly be relying on buses. The MTR won't get you super close. Download the Citymapper app – it'll be your new best friend for figuring out routes. Check bus routes 6, 6X, or 15 – they should get you to more central areas on Hong Kong Island from where the lodge is. From there, the MTR will be much more accessible. As for walking trails, you're in luck. There are some lovely hikes that start near the lodge, leading you down into more populated areas. It's a great way to see some seriously stunning views of the city, and get some exercise too. Just be sure to wear decent shoes and bring water. To find less touristy spots, just wander around the neighborhoods near the bus stops. You'll find local markets, small cafes and stuff – the real Hong Kong. Don't be afraid to get a little lost; that's where the best discoveries happen. Have fun!

That's awesome, thanks! Citymapper sounds essential – I'll download it right away. The hiking trails sound perfect, I love a good walk with a view. Good call on the shoes and water – learned that lesson the hard way on a trip to @Nepal once! Really appreciate the tips on finding the less touristy bits. Getting away from the usual tourist traps is my main goal, so exploring the neighborhoods near the bus stops sounds ideal. I'm excited to experience the "real" Hong Kong.

West Hotel Woes?

fmd_good West Hotel

So I stayed at the West Hotel last week, right in the heart of @HongKong. Gorgeous place, seriously. But the air conditioning in my room was... quirky. It would blast arctic air for five minutes, t… more

Yeah, that sounds awful! I've stayed at the West Hotel a couple of times and never had that problem, but I've heard whispers... It's possible it's just a faulty unit in your room. They're usually pretty quick to fix things if you report it though. Did you call down to reception? Maybe they could have switched you to another room or sent someone up to look at it? Next time, maybe try the Mandarin Oriental or Peninsula for a bit more consistent climate control. They're splurges, but the AC is reliably good.

Thanks! Yeah, I did call reception. They were… unhelpful, to put it mildly. Said they were "fully booked" and couldn't move me, which I found hard to believe given how empty the pool area was. Sent someone up, but he just fiddled with the thermostat and shrugged. The whole thing was a nightmare. Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula are definitely on the list for next time – lesson learned, I guess. Expensive lesson, but a lesson nonetheless!
