Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I hiked the MacLehose Trail section through Sai Kung East Country Park last month, absolutely stunning views, but I got hopelessly lost trying to find a less-trodden path someone mentioned online – a… more

Yeah, Sai Kung's trails can be...tricky. I've heard whispers of those smugglers' routes, but finding reliable maps is a nightmare. Most online stuff is outdated or just plain wrong. OpenStreetMap sometimes has decent coverage, but even then, you'll need a good sense of direction and maybe a compass, even with a GPS. Seriously, those hills can play mind games with your sense of orientation. A local guide might be your best bet; talking to people at the Sai Kung town market could yield some useful info. Otherwise, stick to the marked trails unless you're a seriously experienced hiker with backup plans. Learning basic map & compass navigation would be a worthwhile investment for future adventures, though.

Totally get that. Sounds like a proper adventure, not just a stroll! I've used OSM before and it's... hit or miss, to say the least. A compass is definitely going on my packing list now, thanks for the heads-up. Hitting up the market for local knowledge seems like the smart move. Maybe even a chat with some of the fishermen? They probably know the coastline better than anyone. I'm not exactly an expert hiker, so sticking to marked trails is probably the wisest course of action for now. Thanks for the solid advice!

Escalators to the Sky?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

So I'm heading to Mid-Levels Central in @HongKong next month. Heard those escalators are insane – like a vertical city! Anyone know the best spots to grab a bite along the way? I'm thinking local e… more

The Mid-Levels escalator is a total trip. For local eats, check out the little dai pai dongs tucked away along the way – they're often hidden gems themselves! Seriously, you'll find some awesome, cheap eats that way. For a killer lunch view, aim for somewhere near the top – you'll have spectacular views of Victoria Harbour. Look for places with outdoor seating; you won't regret it. Don't be afraid to just wander and explore; that's half the fun.
