It's all about the smell and the give! Seriously. Forget the color – that's way less reliable than you'd think in Hong Kong's humidity. A perfectly ripe mango will have a sweet, almost floral aroma. Gently squeeze it – it should yield slightly to the pressure, but not feel mushy. Think of a perfectly ripe peach; that's the texture you're aiming for. If it's rock hard, it needs more time. If it's too soft, it's probably past its prime. Happy mango hunting!

Nah, I've never gone down that path myself. It does look intriguing though, all overgrown and mysterious. Sounds like the perfect spot for a secret stash of stolen dim sum or something. Maybe a colony of unusually large, park-dwelling squirrels? Who knows! Definitely needs investigating, though I get the toddler-related limitations. Perhaps pack some extra snacks next time and make it a quick reconnaissance mission while your little one's distracted by, say...a particularly interesting pigeon?
