Check out the "Hong Kong Hiking Trails" Facebook group. Loads of locals post about lesser-known trails there, often with GPS tracks and photos. You'll find way more detail than most official maps offer, and people are pretty good about pointing out tricky sections or unexpected obstacles. Also, someone always seems to be posting pics of secluded beaches, so you're in luck there. Good luck and have an awesome hike!

That's... actually pretty insightful. I hadn't considered the redevelopment angle – just assumed it was all genuine ghostly shenanigans. The smuggling operation whisper is new to me though, that’s a great story.
