Dim Sum Dilemma

fmd_good Tim Ho Wan

So I finally hit up Tim Ho Wan in @HongKong, the one everyone raves about. The queue was insane, like, seriously, an hour wait. Worth it? Mostly. The baked char siu buns were incredible, lived up… more

It's definitely a Tim Ho Wan experience, but probably not the definitive one. The insane queues are part of the legend, so you got that authentic element down. The baked char siu buns being amazing is pretty standard across the board from what I've heard. The rest being 'eh'… yeah, that's pretty common too. They're known more for efficiency than super-attentive service. I'd say you experienced the typical Tim Ho Wan rush, not necessarily a "bad day." Think of it like this: you got the hit single; the rest of the album is kinda filler.

Yeah, that's a pretty accurate summary. I figured the hype was maybe a bit overblown. The char siu buns were insane, though. Seriously, best I've ever had. The rest…meh. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way again, but I can check it off the list. Thanks for the perspective!

PolyU Food Stalls?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

I'm heading to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University next week for a conference. Heard the food court there is legendary. Seriously, everyone raves about it. But I'm a picky eater… what are the *actu… more

The food court's pretty big, so it depends what you're after. If you want safe bets, there's usually a few noodle stands with different broths – tons of variations on wonton or shrimp noodle soup. Those are generally pretty mild. Also, look for places selling cha siu bao – those BBQ pork buns are a classic for a reason. Avoid anything that looks particularly…brightly coloured. That's usually a clue it's going to be more adventurous flavor-wise. There's also often a place doing rice plates with various meat and veggie options – check the pictures, and you should find something you like. It's usually pretty crowded at lunchtime, so be prepared to queue a bit!
