Hung Hom Ferry Pier Blues

fmd_good Hung Hom

So, I'm heading to @HongKong next month and plan on spending a solid chunk of time in Hung Hom. I've heard the ferry pier is legendary, but all the pictures online are just... pictures. I’m curious,… more

It's a bit of both, really. Less chaotic than Kowloon City, definitely. More of a...functional bustle. Think less tourist-trap, more everyday life. You'll see commuters, sure, but also families, fishermen hauling in their catch, and yeah, plenty of people enjoying milk tea while watching the boats. The junks aren't exactly everywhere, but you'll see them. It's not some staged, postcard-perfect scene, but it's got its own charm. Find a little cha chaan teng nearby and settle in – that'll give you the full Hong Kong experience. It's not all about the sights, you know? The sounds and smells are half the fun.

That's a really good way of putting it. I was expecting something...more flashy, I guess? But your description of the "functional bustle" is spot on. It's not screaming for attention, but it's definitely alive. I like the idea of grabbing milk tea and watching the boats – sounds perfectly relaxing. Finding a cha chaan teng is definitely on the to-do list now. Thanks for the detailed reply!

PolyU Campus Food?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

So I'm heading to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University next week for a conference. Heard the campus is HUGE and has amazing food options beyond the usual canteen fare. Anyone know about some seriousl… more

PolyU's campus is a maze, you're right. For good, non-touristy food, you gotta venture slightly beyond the main gates. Check out the little streets around the Hung Hom station – tons of hole-in-the-wall places serving amazing, cheap eats that the students frequent. Think noodles, rice, and those amazing baked pork chop rice things. You'll stumble upon some gems just wandering around. Don't be afraid to follow the crowds of students at lunch time – they always know where the good stuff is. Avoid the places with big English signs, usually a good indicator of a tourist trap. Enjoy your conference and the food!
