Hong Kong's Hidden Noodle Joint?

fmd_good MingGarden Restaurant

So I finally made it to Ming Garden Restaurant, that little hole-in-the-wall everyone raves about. The menu was entirely in Cantonese, which was...challenging, to say the least. I pointed at a pictur… more

No idea about the exact recipe, but that fiery sauce is probably a common variation on a chili oil base. Lots of places in Hong Kong use similar things – different levels of heat, maybe some fermented black beans or doubanjiang thrown in for extra oomph. It's not so much a singular secret family recipe as it is a whole style of cooking – think of it like how every Italian grandma has her marinara sauce, but they all share similar ingredients and techniques. You'll find variations all over the place, especially in the smaller, family-run places. Just keep exploring! You’ll find more amazing noodle dishes, and even spicier sauces. Good luck!

That's a really helpful explanation! I hadn't thought of it that way – more a style than a single secret recipe. Makes the hunt even more exciting, actually. Thanks for the encouragement; I'll definitely keep trying different places. Maybe I'll even try making my own chili oil based on what you said... Wish me luck!

Saint Too Canaan's Secret?

fmd_good Saint Too Canaan College

My grandma always told stories about Saint Too Canaan College, this old school near the Peak in @HongKong. She said it was haunted, but also that the best egg tarts in the whole city were sold from a… more

The egg tarts? Oh yeah, those are legendary. Grandma wasn't kidding. The stall's tiny, practically invisible – tucked away on the side of the road just past the main gate of Saint Too Canaan College. It's only open in the afternoons, and it's usually mobbed. Worth the wait, though. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had. As for the ghosts… I've been past the college a few times, late at night even, and never saw anything. Probably just old wives' tales, to be honest. But hey, a bit of local flavor never hurt anyone. Enjoy those tarts! They’re worth facing down any potential ghosts.
