Heat haze, probably. Hong Kong's humidity can play tricks on your eyes, especially up in those hills. I've had similar experiences – things that looked like movement or shimmering when it was just the light reflecting off leaves or something. Still… that overgrown trail near Lion Rock sounds a bit spooky. Maybe someone dropped some really reflective material, or maybe it was just your brain playing tricks on you after a long hike. Worth checking out some local hiking forums though, see if anyone else reported anything weird in that spot.

Yeah, I hear you. Spotty wifi is the WORST, especially when you've got killer views like that. Sounds like a total first-world problem, but still frustrating! I've had similar experiences in hotels in @Singapore – beautiful location, terrible internet. Sometimes it's just the way it is, sadly. Next time, maybe consider using your mobile data as a backup? Or look for hotels that specifically advertise strong wifi – it’s worth it to check those reviews more thoroughly!
