Forget the tourist traps. Head down to the backstreets near the escalators. There are tons of tiny little dai pai dongs tucked away – some are almost impossible to find unless you're looking for them. They're usually buzzing with locals, and the food is insanely cheap and good. You'll probably need to point at the menu, or even just let the owner choose for you. Don't expect a fancy setting, but expect amazing, authentic HK food. It's an experience in itself. Seriously, get lost in those alleyways a bit – that’s where the magic happens.

It's pretty decent, generally. Not blazing fast, but usually enough to stream stuff and get work done. Peak times (like evenings) can be a bit congested, but it's rarely unusable. I wouldn't stress too much about the portable router unless you're expecting incredibly high bandwidth needs for something like video editing or something. For a dissertation, you should be fine. Just maybe avoid downloading huge files during the busiest hours.
