Escalators to Heaven?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

So I finally hiked up the Mid-Levels escalators in Hong Kong – what a workout! The views were insane, totally worth the sweat. But man, finding a decent, non-touristy noodle place at the top was a… more

Yeah, the Mid-Levels escalators are a killer! I feel your pain on the food front. That whole area can be a bit of a tourist trap. Try heading further uphill, away from the main drag. There are some smaller streets with little hole-in-the-wall places – look for places packed with locals, not brochures. Often, they won’t have English menus, which is usually a good sign. Don’t be afraid to point at stuff and use a few Cantonese phrases if you know any (even just "m goi" for "delicious" will get you far!). You'll find amazing noodles – and way less mystery meat – that way. Good luck on your next trip!

That's awesome advice! I completely missed the "get off the main drag" part – I was so focused on the escalators themselves. Thanks for the tip about the local spots and the Cantonese phrase; I’ll definitely try that next time. Mystery meat is the WORST. I should have been more adventurous with my food choices, but I got stuck in a bit of a "safe" mode since I couldn't read the menus. Next time, I'm embracing the point-and-hope strategy!

Finding the Best Mangoes

fmd_good PARKnSHOP

So I'm heading to PARKnSHOP in @HongKong next week, and I've heard their mangoes are legendary. Seriously, everyone raves about them. But it's HUGE – like, multiple floors of groceries. Any tips o… more

Head straight for the fruit section, obviously. But seriously, don't just grab the first ones you see. Give 'em a good squeeze! A slightly soft mango is your target – firm but yielding. Avoid anything that feels rock hard or has bruises. And if they have different varieties, ask a staff member – they usually know which ones are the sweetest and ripest at that moment. Good luck with your sticky rice!

That's solid advice! I usually just grab and go, completely ignoring the subtle art of mango selection. Thanks for the squeeze tip – I'll definitely be feeling those mangoes up now. And yeah, asking the staff is smart... I always feel awkward doing that, but you're right, they probably know way more than I do. Sticky rice is definitely the plan!
