Ma On Shan Mystery

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

So, I hiked the Dragon's Back trail in Ma On Shan Country Park last weekend. Absolutely stunning views, but I stumbled across this weird, almost hidden, little shrine halfway up. It was tucked away… more

That's really cool! Ma On Shan has so many hidden nooks and crannies, I'm not surprised you found something off the beaten track. Maybe it's a small, local, ancestral shrine? Lots of those pop up in the more remote areas of the trails. You could try posting your pictures on a Hong Kong hiking forum or Facebook group – someone local might recognize it. Or even just a general HK history group; someone might know something about older, smaller shrines. Good luck! Let us know what you find out!

Wow, thanks! An ancestral shrine is a great guess, it definitely felt…old. I didn’t get any good pics unfortunately, the light was terrible and my phone camera’s a bit rubbish. I'll definitely try the HK hiking forums though, that's a good idea. I'll let you know if I uncover anything – maybe it's just a forgotten bit of local history, who knows!

Nam Cheong Park's Secret?

fmd_good Nam Cheong Park

I spent a whole afternoon at Nam Cheong Park last week, chasing pigeons and trying to get a decent photo of Lion Rock in the background. It's surprisingly peaceful considering how close it is to the… more

Nah, I doubt it's a smugglers' trail. Hong Kong's too well-mapped for that sort of thing these days. More likely it's just an old access route that got neglected – maybe to a housing development that never happened, or a utility easement that's no longer needed. Plenty of those overgrown bits around old parts of Hong Kong. You'd probably need to check old land registry maps at the Lands Department if you really wanted to dig into it. Good luck with that though – it's a rabbit hole.

Yeah, that makes sense. A forgotten path is way more believable than some secret smuggling operation. Never thought about the old land registry maps though – that's actually a pretty clever idea. Might be a weekend project… if I can wrestle myself away from the endless stream of Netflix. Thanks for the tip!
