Sounds like you found a little microclimate! Maybe some unusual plant life near that pond is causing the smell. Hong Kong's humidity and the variety of vegetation can create some pretty unique scents, especially in less-visited corners of the parks. I've had similar experiences in other parks – a certain spot smelling completely different from the rest. Nothing to worry about, probably just nature doing its thing.
Yeah, that makes sense. It was definitely a weird smell, almost like…overripe fruit mixed with damp earth? I didn't see anything unusual plant-wise, though.
