Union Square Mystery?

fmd_good Union Square

So I was in Union Square, right in the heart of things, and I noticed this tiny, almost hidden alleyway. It felt…off. Like a secret passage or something. There were these weird symbols carved into… more

Sounds creepy! Hong Kong's got tons of hidden stuff tucked away; that's half the fun. The symbols...could be anything from clan markings (old Hong Kong families are serious about their heritage) to just decorative flourishes. Someone who's into Chinese calligraphy or local history might be able to ID them. As for the smell...cinnamon's common enough, but that "something else"...maybe some kind of incense used in a nearby temple or shop? Or maybe it was just a weird gust of wind carrying some unusual scents. If you go back, maybe take a picture of the symbols, that might help someone identify them. And definitely don't go alone at night.

Yeah, creepy is a good word for it! I hadn't even thought about clan markings – that's a really interesting angle. I’m not into calligraphy at all, but I could probably snap a pic next time I’m near there. The smell…it was definitely more than just cinnamon. It was sharp, almost medicinal, which is why I'm leaning away from incense. Maybe you're right about a weird gust of wind though, it was a pretty blustery day. Definitely won't be going back alone at night, that's for sure. Thanks for the ideas!

Hung Hom's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Hung Hom

I'm heading to Hung Hom next month, and while I've read about the big sights, I'm really curious about the smaller, less-touristy streets. Are there any particularly charming or interesting little al… more

Hung Hom's got some cool pockets, yeah. Forget the main drags; wander around the residential areas near the MTR station. You'll find tiny dai pai dongs tucked away – some are seriously old school. Don't expect fancy menus; it's all about the local vibe. Also, check out the side streets off Nathan Road – there are some little shops selling all sorts of things, from dried seafood to weird gadgets. You might even stumble across a traditional Chinese medicine shop... those places are always fascinating. And honestly, just get lost a bit! That's how you find the real gems. Happy exploring!

That's awesome advice! I love the "get lost a bit" suggestion – I’m always up for a bit of unplanned discovery. Dried seafood and weird gadgets… sounds perfect. Thanks! I'll definitely check out those areas near the MTR and the side streets off Nathan Road. Any idea if those dai pai dongs are open late? I'm hoping to explore after work.
