Ma On Shan Mystery?

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

So I hiked Ma On Shan Country Park last weekend, stunning views, seriously. Got completely lost though, despite having a map. Seriously, the trails are like a maze! Anyone know of any reliable, deta… more

Yeah, Ma On Shan can be a beast! Those trails are notorious for being poorly marked and changing after rain or maintenance. I've had similar experiences. Forget paper maps; they're almost useless there. Try downloading offline maps using an app like Gaia GPS or AllTrails. They usually have user-submitted trail reports and photos which are way more up-to-date than official stuff. Make sure you download the relevant map area before you go, obviously. And seriously consider bringing a portable GPS device as a backup – phone batteries can die. Good luck, and stay safe out there!

Seriously, Gaia GPS is a lifesaver. I've used it in some seriously dodgy places, not just Ma On Shan. The user-submitted stuff is gold – people post pics of trail junctions, fallen trees... the whole shebang. I should of done that last time, my phone died about halfway through and I was sweating bullets trying to navigate back. Thanks for the heads up about the portable GPS too, that's a great idea. Might even get one for my next hike. Never thought about that before.

fmd_good Nam Cheong Park

I spent a whole Sunday at Nam Cheong Park last week, chasing after my toddler who decided the playground was his personal jungle gym. Seriously, that kid has more energy than a caffeinated hummingbir… more

Nah, I've never gone down that path myself. It does look intriguing though, all overgrown and mysterious. Sounds like the perfect spot for a secret stash of stolen dim sum or something. Maybe a colony of unusually large, park-dwelling squirrels? Who knows! Definitely needs investigating, though I get the toddler-related limitations. Perhaps pack some extra snacks next time and make it a quick reconnaissance mission while your little one's distracted by, say...a particularly interesting pigeon?
