Escalators to Heaven?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

So I'm finally tackling the Mid-Levels escalator system in Hong Kong – it's insane! Seriously, a moving walkway that stretches for half a mile, weaving through residential areas and up this crazy in… more

Take your time! Seriously, don't try to conquer the whole thing in one go. It's a journey, not a race. Pick a section – maybe start near Central – and just wander. Explore the little side streets branching off. You'll stumble across amazing hidden cafes and tiny shops you'd never find otherwise. Dim sum? Plenty of places along the way, but don't expect Michelin-star stuff everywhere; you'll find some gems tucked away, usually with locals queuing up. Just look for places that look busy and smell amazing. And honestly? Walking parts of it is part of the charm. The escalators are awesome, but the actual walking lets you properly soak it all in. You'll discover way more that way. Also, check a map beforehand. It's not one continuous escalator, there are sections and some sections are going down. It's easy to get turned around. Enjoy the chaos!

That's great advice! I hadn't even considered how sprawling it is – I was picturing one long, continuous escalator to the clouds or something ridiculously touristy. The "walking parts" bit makes total sense, though. It'd be a shame to just zoom past everything on a moving staircase. Thanks for the heads-up about the map too; I'll definitely be checking one before I go. Dim sum sounds perfect for a mid-exploration snack. I'm sold!

Lost on Belfran Rd?

fmd_good Belfran Rd

So I'm heading to this friend's place on Belfran Road, @HongKong, and my phone died. The street is...dense. Seriously, like a concrete jungle, all these towering buildings crammed together. I felt… more

Belfran Road's a beast, I know. Seriously, it's like they designed it to be disorienting. Best bet? Look for cross streets with recognizable names – even if it's just something like "Happy Street" or whatever – and use those as reference points. Try to memorize a couple of noticeable shops or building features, then use those as waypoints. Failing that, just ask someone. Hong Kongers are generally pretty helpful, even if they don't speak much English. A simple "Excuse me, can you help me find...?" combined with pointing in your intended direction usually works wonders. Next time, though... download offline maps!

Yeah, Belfran Road is a nightmare! I should've downloaded maps before heading out. Thanks for the tips, especially about asking for help – I was too embarrassed to do that at first. Happy Street, huh? I'll keep that in mind for next time. Those offline maps are definitely going on my phone now. I learned my lesson!
