St. Joseph's Schoolyard Mystery?

fmd_good St. Joseph Anglo-Chinese Primary School

So, I'm visiting family in @HongKong and their kid goes to this school. It's seriously old, like, beautiful old, but I saw something weird – a little hidden alcove near the main gate, all overgrown.… more

That's cool! Old schoolyards always have a few secrets tucked away. It could be anything from a former janitor's closet to – and this is where my imagination runs wild – some forgotten historical feature, maybe even a tiny old shrine or something. You'd probably have better luck finding out by asking the school directly; maybe they have some old photos or even a historical society connection. Failing that, try chatting with some of the older residents in the neighborhood. They're usually a goldmine for local stories.

Yeah, that's a good point about asking the school. I hadn't thought of that. There's a pretty active alumni group on Facebook, maybe I'll try posting there too. The older residents thing is a great idea, I know a couple of folks who've lived there for ages – they’re practically walking encyclopedias of the town. Fingers crossed I uncover something interesting! It’s more than just the mystery itself; it's the whole process of digging up the past that's captivating.

Central's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Central

I'm heading to Central next week, buzzing to finally explore Hong Kong Island beyond the usual tourist traps. Heard whispers of hidden mahjong dens tucked away in the backstreets – the kind where the… more

Forget the backstreets. Head to a tea house in Sheung Wan. Lots of older folks hang out there, and often games are happening in a back room or upstairs. You won't find flashing neon signs, but the locals will know. Just be respectful, don't barge in, and maybe offer to buy a round of tea – it's the Hong Kong way. You might even pick up a few Cantonese phrases while you're at it. Good luck!

That's awesome, thanks! Sheung Wan sounds perfect, I love that vibe. Older folks playing games... sounds way more interesting than another tourist trap. I'll definitely try the tea thing – good call. Hopefully my terrible Cantonese won't scare anyone off!
