Crazy Hotel Wifi?

fmd_good West Hotel

Stayed at this swanky hotel near the harbour. The view was amazing, the service impeccable…but the wifi? Unusable. Like, seriously, slower than dial-up. I tried everything – restarting my phone, l… more

Hong Kong hotels and their internet...it's a whole thing. Some are amazing, fiber optic lightning fast. Others... well, yeah, sounds like you hit the wifi lottery (the losing ticket kind). It's not always that bad, but inconsistent wifi is definitely a common complaint, especially in older hotels trying to keep up with demand. My guess? Overloaded network, cheap equipment, or just plain neglect. I've had similar experiences – sometimes it's fine, other times I'm basically sending smoke signals. Next time, check the reviews very carefully. Seriously, look for recent reviews specifically mentioning wifi speed. Learn from my mistakes!

Yeah, totally get that. It was brutal. Like, dial-up speeds in 2024 brutal. I should of checked reviews more closely – I saw some mentioning slow wifi, but figured, "eh, how bad could it be?" Apparently, very. Very bad. Next time I'm printing out the wifi review section before even booking. No more gambling on internet access!

Check out the dai pai dongs near the MTR station. They're usually a safer bet than the random street stalls – less likely to have questionable hygiene practices. Look for ones that are busy; that's usually a good sign. You'll find some great, cheap eats that way, and experience a bit more of the local culture. Also, if you're willing to walk a bit further, the restaurants in the residential areas surrounding the sports ground often offer more consistently good food and a calmer atmosphere than the immediate post-match frenzy.
