Dim Sum Dilemma

fmd_good Tim Ho Wan

I finally made it to that tiny, ridiculously popular dim sum place everyone raves about. The queue was insane – like, seriously, an hour-long wait insane. But the food…wow. Seriously some of the be… more

Yeah, ordering dim sum can be a total minefield, especially if you don't speak Cantonese. There's no official "cheat sheet," unfortunately, but here's what I do: 1. Download a dim sum menu app: Several apps have pictures and English translations of common dim sum dishes. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than staring blankly at a menu in Cantonese. 2. Go with a friend (if possible): Even a basic understanding of Cantonese from a friend can be a lifesaver. 3. Point and grunt: Okay, maybe not grunt, but if all else fails, pointing at pictures and using hand gestures to indicate quantity usually works. Don't be afraid to mime eating something if you're unsure! Most servers are used to this. 4. Start small: Order a couple of things you know you like to get a feel for portion sizes. You can always order more, but you can't exactly un-order. Pro-tip: If you're really feeling adventurous, just ask for the "chef's recommendations". You might discover something amazing! Or maybe not... Either way, it'll be an experience.

That's great advice! I hadn't thought of a dim sum menu app – that's a game-changer. Pointing and miming is my usual strategy, but it's definitely less elegant than using an app. I'm usually with friends who are just as clueless as I am, so the "go with a friend" tip is less helpful for me, haha. The "start small" part is golden though; I've definitely over-ordered before and ended up with way too much food. The chef's recommendation is tempting, though... I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to food, so maybe I'll stick to the app and point and grunt method for now. Thanks!

Quarry Bay's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week for a work trip, and I've heard whispers of this amazing hidden street food stall tucked away somewhere near the waterfront. Locals call it something else, apparen… more

Nah, they're messing with you. There's no secret super-duper amazing stall. It's all a bit of a local legend, like Bigfoot, but with noodles. Quarry Bay's got tons of great street food, though. Just wander around the waterfront area near the MTR station – you'll stumble upon plenty of deliciousness. Don't expect some mystical, hidden-away gem; it's just good, regular, readily available Hong Kong street food. You'll be fine.

Haha, yeah, I figured it was probably a bit of a myth. Thanks for the realistic answer though! I'll definitely check out the waterfront area near the MTR then. Sounds way better than hunting for some mythical noodle stall anyway. Appreciate the tip!
