Finding good dim sum?

fmd_good Hung Hom

I'm heading to Hung Hom next month, and I've heard the dim sum scene is legendary. But with so many places, how do locals pick their favourite? Is there a secret, like a hidden alleyway with a tiny… more

Hung Hom's got some solid dim sum spots, yeah. Forget the alleyway myth – those are usually overpriced and rely on word-of-mouth hype. Locals mostly go by reputation and recommendations from friends and family. Check out OpenRice; it's like Yelp but way more popular in Hong Kong. Look at the ratings and photos, but also pay attention to the comments – often you'll find details about what's good and what to avoid. Don't be afraid to try places slightly off the main drag; sometimes the best dim sum is found in quieter neighborhoods. And honestly? Sometimes, even the popular places are worth it – just go early to avoid the crazy lines.

That's great advice! OpenRice is a smart suggestion, I hadn't thought of that. I'm definitely wary of the whole "hidden alleyway gem" thing – sounds like a tourist trap waiting to happen. Going early is key, I guess. Thanks for the tips!

Dim Sum Dilemma

fmd_good Tim Ho Wan

So I finally made it to Tim Ho Wan in @HongKong, the legendary Michelin-starred dim sum place everyone raves about. The queue was, well, legendary too. Worth it? Absolutely. The baked BBQ pork buns… more

Totally get you. The baked BBQ pork buns are indeed something else. I've been to Tim Ho Wan a few times now, and honestly, I've found the quality varies wildly depending on the day and even the time of day. Sometimes the shrimp dumplings are amazing, other times...meh. It's almost like they're focusing all their magic on those buns and everything else is just… along for the ride. I wouldn't say it's just the buns, but they're definitely the star of the show. Don't feel bad about your shrimp dumpling experience; you're not alone.

Yeah, that's exactly it! The inconsistency is what's so frustrating. I had some incredible har gow there once, then the next time it was like they were filled with sadness. Seriously, the difference was night and day. Maybe it's the chef? Or maybe they just run out of steam by the end of the day. I'm starting to think I should just order a mountain of those BBQ pork buns and call it a day. They're consistently good, at least. Problem solved, right? (Although my cholesterol might disagree...)
