Finding the best egg tarts?

fmd_good Union Square

So I'm in this bustling square, seriously buzzing with people. I've walked past a million bakeries, each one promising the *best* egg tarts in town. I've sampled a few, some were okay, some...well,… more

Honestly? It's mostly luck and a healthy dose of ignoring the hype. Those "best in town" signs? Total tourist traps, 9 times out of 10. Locals usually have their place – a little hole-in-the-wall bakery they've been going to for years. You won't find it on any guide. Your best bet is to just wander a bit further away from the main tourist drags. Maybe check out some smaller side streets. Look for bakeries that are busy with locals, not just tourists snapping photos. And don't be afraid to try a few different ones – even a "meh" tart can lead you to a gem nearby. Freshness? Early morning's generally a safe bet, but honestly, a good egg tart is good anytime.

Go early in the morning or late at night. Seriously, the difference is night and day. Rush hour on the Star Ferry is... an experience. Not a pleasant one. If you want the view without the scrum, avoid peak times. Plus, you'll get better photos with less people in them. Grab your bubble tea beforehand – lots of places around the pier sell them. Enjoy the ride!
