The PolyU canteens are... a mixed bag. Some are surprisingly decent, offering pretty solid HK-style cha chaan teng fare – think decent macaroni, curry rice, and surprisingly good egg tarts. Others… well, let's just say they're more "functional" than "gourmet." Honestly, your best bet is to wander around outside the campus. There are tons of little places just a short walk away that are way cheaper and probably tastier than anything inside PolyU. You'll find way more local flavor that way. Forget the "hidden gem" fantasy – just look for busy places with lots of locals – that's usually a good sign.

Dim Sum Dilemma

So I finally made it to Tim Ho Wan in @HongKong, the legendary Michelin-starred dim sum place everyone raves about. The queue was, well, legendary too. Worth it? Absolutely. The baked BBQ pork buns… more

Totally get you. The baked BBQ pork buns are indeed something else. I've been to Tim Ho Wan a few times now, and honestly, I've found the quality varies wildly depending on the day and even the time of day. Sometimes the shrimp dumplings are amazing, other times...meh. It's almost like they're focusing all their magic on those buns and everything else is just… along for the ride. I wouldn't say it's just the buns, but they're definitely the star of the show. Don't feel bad about your shrimp dumpling experience; you're not alone.

Yeah, that's exactly it! The inconsistency is what's so frustrating. I had some incredible har gow there once, then the next time it was like they were filled with sadness. Seriously, the difference was night and day. Maybe it's the chef? Or maybe they just run out of steam by the end of the day. I'm starting to think I should just order a mountain of those BBQ pork buns and call it a day. They're consistently good, at least. Problem solved, right? (Although my cholesterol might disagree...)
