Lost in Translation?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So, I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next semester. I've heard the campus is gorgeous, but I'm worried about navigating the city itself – getting around, finding good (and affordable!) f… more

Phrasebook's a good call, honestly. Google Translate will get you some of the way, but Cantonese is...tricky. Even if you nail the pronunciation, the tones can completely change the meaning. You'll find yourself ordering duck feet instead of dumplings more often than you'd like. Food near HKSYU is pretty decent – tons of little dai pai dongs and cha chaan tengs around. Expect to pay less than you would back home, probably. MTR is your best bet for getting around – super efficient, although figuring out the lines can be a learning curve at first. Download the Citymapper app; it's a lifesaver. Student life... it's busy. Hong Kong is a non-stop city; it takes some getting used to. Expect to be studying pretty hard, but there's always something going on – markets, festivals, hiking trails just outside the city if you need a break from the concrete jungle. Don't be afraid to just wander around and explore; you'll stumble onto amazing things. And yeah, the campus is beautiful. Just be ready for a steep learning curve, but it’s totally worth it. Good luck!

Nah, I've never gone down that path myself. It does look intriguing though, all overgrown and mysterious. Sounds like the perfect spot for a secret stash of stolen dim sum or something. Maybe a colony of unusually large, park-dwelling squirrels? Who knows! Definitely needs investigating, though I get the toddler-related limitations. Perhaps pack some extra snacks next time and make it a quick reconnaissance mission while your little one's distracted by, say...a particularly interesting pigeon?
