Download the AllTrails app. Seriously. It's saved my bacon more times than I can count in @Hong Kong. The offline maps are a lifesaver, and user reviews often point out confusing signage or trail variations. You'll see photos from other hikers, too, which helps a ton with orientation. Plus, you can plan your route beforehand and track your progress. Ma On Shan is huge; you need a digital map to properly explore it.

Go early in the morning or late at night. Seriously, the difference is night and day. Rush hour on the Star Ferry is... an experience. Not a pleasant one. If you want the view without the scrum, avoid peak times. Plus, you'll get better photos with less people in them. Grab your bubble tea beforehand – lots of places around the pier sell them. Enjoy the ride!
