Hiking Ma On Shan: Mosquito Mayhem?

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

So I went hiking in this amazing park, right? The views were incredible, seriously breathtaking. I spent hours just wandering around, snapping photos. Absolutely stunning. But...the mosquitoes! Oh… more

Yeah, Ma On Shan can be a mosquito breeding ground, especially in the more humid areas and near the water. I've had similar experiences. Forget hazmat suits, though – way overkill. Try this: long sleeves and pants (light, breathable material is key!), good quality DEET repellent (at least 30% DEET), and maybe a mosquito head net if you're really sensitive. Also, timing is everything. Go early morning or late afternoon when it's cooler and the little vampires are less active. And bring a backup repellent, you don't want to run out mid-hike!

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
