Depends heavily on which university. Some are significantly hillier than others. The shuttle buses are frequent, but honestly, even with good knees, you'll probably find yourself using them a fair bit, especially if you have classes in different buildings. A mountain goat might be overkill, but a good pair of walking shoes and maybe some trekking poles wouldn't hurt. Seriously though, check the campus map carefully before you commit to anything. There are some seriously intense inclines.

Check out the backstreets off Shanghai Street, near the stadium. Lots of little places pop up before the matches. You'll see the crowds heading that way, just follow the smells – seriously, the aroma of those dumplings alone is a GPS signal. Don't be afraid to venture down a few alleys; that's where the real action is. Good luck, and may the best dumplings win!
