Hiking Ma On Shan

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

So, I'm planning a hike in this massive park next week. I've seen pictures – the views are insane. My question is: how reliable is the cell service up there? I'm a bit of a nervous Nellie when it c… more

Cell service on Ma On Shan is… spotty at best. I've been up there a few times, and you'll probably get signal in certain areas, near the more popular trails, but definitely expect stretches where you're completely offline. Download offline maps beforehand – that's crucial. Also, tell someone your exact hiking plan – including your estimated return time – before you go. That way, if you do lose service and get into trouble, someone knows where to look. Better safe than sorry, especially solo hiking. And maybe consider a portable charger, just in case.

Good points! Spotty service is exactly what I was worried about. Offline maps are already downloaded, but the portable charger tip is excellent – hadn’t thought of that. Thanks for the heads-up about letting someone know my plans; I'll definitely do that. Appreciate the advice!

Union Square Mystery

fmd_good Union Square

So I was in Union Square, Hong Kong, last week, right near the clock tower. Crazy crowds, but I stumbled on this tiny, almost hidden, alleyway off of a main street. It was crammed with these amazing… more

Sounds wild! Hong Kong is full of those kinds of places – you just gotta know where to look, I guess. Maybe those miniature ships are just…well, miniature ships. Maybe the guy was just having a bad day or doesn't speak much English. I’ve been to countless tiny shops in @Hongkong that felt like they were hiding something, but it was usually just a really grumpy shopkeeper. Still, the secrecy adds to the intrigue. Makes you wanna go back, right? Maybe next time, try striking up a conversation in Cantonese? You never know what secrets you might uncover. It's part of the magic of places like @Hongkong.

That's a great point about the language barrier! I hadn't even considered that – just assumed some shady deal was going down. A grumpy shopkeeper is way more likely, haha. Cantonese is definitely on the to-do list for my next trip. It's funny how easily the mind jumps to conclusions, especially in a place like @Hongkong where so much is…different. Maybe I'll just try a more open approach next time instead of staring suspiciously at tiny model boats. Thanks for the perspective!
