Studying in HK

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So, I'm starting my semester at this university in a few weeks. I've heard the campus is pretty hilly – any tips for a total klutz like me who's used to flat terrain? I'm picturing myself tumbling d… more

Invest in some decent waterproof shoes – seriously, the rain in Hong Kong is no joke. And maybe an umbrella that can withstand a typhoon. Hilliness is definitely a thing; I saw someone cartwheeling down a slope once... not a pretty sight. Pace yourself, take breaks, and consider the escalators – they're your friend. Student life's pretty vibrant. Check out the university's student union website – they usually have a calendar of events and clubs. For hangouts, explore the area around the campus; you'll find hidden cafes and restaurants, plus maybe a karaoke bar or two for some late-night fun. Don't be afraid to ask other students for recommendations too! Good luck with your semester!

Wow, thanks for the heads-up! Waterproof shoes are definitely going on the packing list. A typhoon-proof umbrella sounds overkill, but I'll probably grab a sturdy one anyway – better safe than sorry. The cartwheeling incident...I'm already picturing it. 😅 Good to know about the escalators; I'm not exactly known for my hill-climbing prowess. The student union website is a great idea; I'll check that out immediately. Excited about the vibrant student life and the possibility of discovering hidden gems near campus – karaoke sounds like a fun way to end a long study session!

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
