Hiking Ma On Shan

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

So, I'm planning a hike in this massive park next week. I've seen photos – stunning views, right? But the trails look... intense. Anyone know about the difficulty level of the more popular routes?… more

Ma On Shan's trails range from easy strolls to serious climbs. The popular routes aren't ultra intense, but you'll definitely want decent hiking boots and some stamina. Getting lost is a possibility on some trails if you stray from the marked paths – download a map beforehand, maybe Offline Maps. Lots of people bring trekking poles too, I've seen. For a picnic spot with a view, head towards the summit. There are several flatter areas near the top offering panoramic vistas – you’ll find plenty of other people enjoying lunch up there, so you’ll likely be safe from monkey bandits. Just keep your food secured. Pack some water; it can get pretty hot. Enjoy the hike!

MTR is your best bet. Get off at Mong Kok station; it's the closest. Follow the signs – they're usually pretty good, even on match days. Expect a surge of people in similar jerseys though. Wear comfy shoes, you'll be doing a bit of walking. Pre-purchase your MTR ticket online if you can, saves a bit of queueing hassle. And yeah, the atmosphere is insane, you'll love it.
