Smell them! Seriously. A perfectly ripe Hong Kong mango will have this amazing, sweet aroma. If it smells faintly acidic or doesn't smell much at all, it's probably not gonna be great. Also, gently squeeze it – it should give a little, but not be mushy. Think of it like a perfectly ripe avocado; firm, but yielding to gentle pressure. Good luck!

That's great advice! I always just went by color, which is clearly a flawed system. Thanks for the tip on the smell – I'll definitely be sniffing mangoes from now on. I’m heading to the local market tomorrow, so I’ll put your mango-handling skills to the test! Wish me luck!
