PolyU Food?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

So I'm heading to PolyU next week for a conference. Heard the canteen food is legendary...or at least, *legendary* in the way only uni canteen food can be. Seriously though, is it actually any good?… more

Depends what you're into, really. The PolyU canteens are...a mixed bag. There's usually at least one decent noodle stall, often with ridiculously long queues. Prepare to wait. They're usually good, though – the kind of intensely flavourful, MSG-laden goodness that keeps you coming back for more. Avoid the "western" food options unless you're desperate. Think soggy chips and suspiciously grey chicken. There’s usually a small selection of healthier stuff – salads, maybe some rice dishes – but it’s often a bit…sad. Better to just power through the noodle situation. You'll also probably find a few little shops selling things like egg waffles or bubble tea outside the main canteens. They’re often better than the canteen food tbh. Check out what's near your conference venue; you might find some better options nearby, but honestly, the legendary canteen status is...mostly legendary for its sheer volume of students and the resulting chaotic energy. Manage your expectations!

Haha, yeah, that sounds about right. The long queues are legendary, aren't they? I've definitely experienced the "intensely flavourful, MSG-laden goodness" before – it's an acquired taste, but addictive! I’ll skip the western food then, thanks for the heads-up. Egg waffles and bubble tea outside sounds promising though; I'll keep an eye out for those. My conference is in the main building, so I guess I'm stuck with the canteen options mostly. Might just bring snacks, to be safe. Thanks for the advice!

Dim Sum Dilemma?

fmd_good Tim Ho Wan

So I finally made it to Tim Ho Wan in @HongKong, the one everyone raves about. The hype is REAL, I mean seriously, the baked char siu buns were... otherworldly. But here's the thing: the menu is HUGE… more

Okay, so you conquered the baked char siu buns – high five! Those things are legendary. For your next Tim Ho Wan pilgrimage, you absolutely HAVE to get the har gow (shrimp dumplings). Seriously, the texture is insane. Then, branch out a little – their siu mai (pork dumplings) are also top-tier. Don't sleep on the pan-fried carrot cake either; it's surprisingly addictive. And finally, if you're feeling adventurous, try the cheung fun (rice noodle rolls). They’re simple, but the execution is perfect. That's a solid starting point for your next dim sum adventure. You won't regret it. Enjoy!
