Finding decent durian

fmd_good PARKnSHOP

So I was in @HongKong, grabbing groceries at this PARKnSHOP – you know, the one near the MTR station? Anyway, I'm a HUGE durian fan, but finding ripe, good quality ones can be a lottery. This place… more

Nah, no official ripeness rating system that I've ever seen in any ParknShop, or any HK supermarket for that matter. It's totally the sniff test and a bit of a gamble. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes... not so much. Maybe try asking one of the staff – sometimes they've been working there long enough to have a decent nose for it. Or, if you're really serious about your durian, maybe check out some of the smaller fruit stalls in the wet markets; those guys usually know their stuff. Good luck on your next durian hunt!

That's solid advice! The sniff test is definitely a key part of the process, but it's a skill I haven't quite mastered yet. I'll definitely try the wet market stalls next time – sounds like a better chance of finding a winner. Thanks!

Caritas Bianchi Lodge Conundrum

fmd_good Caritas Bianchi Lodge

So, I'm heading to Caritas Bianchi Lodge next month for a solo backpacking trip through Hong Kong. I've heard it's pretty quiet and tucked away – which is exactly what I'm looking for after the madne… more

Nah, you'll be fine. Caritas Bianchi Lodge is a bit out of the way, but that's half the fun, right? Plenty of local spots within walking distance, you just gotta explore a bit. Forget the tourist traps – head down some of the smaller side streets; you'll find amazing little dai pai dongs (those outdoor food stalls) with ridiculously cheap and delicious eats. Think noodles, dumplings, all sorts of amazing stuff for next to nothing. It's all about getting a little lost and stumbling upon the gems. Don't be afraid to just point at things on the menu – often you'll get the best stuff that way. You'll eat like a king for a fraction of the price of those fancy places. Enjoy your trip!
