PolyU Food Scene?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

So I'm heading to PolyU next week for a conference. Heard the campus is HUGE. Seriously, like a small city. My question is: what are the *best* cheap eats around campus? I'm on a budget, but still w… more

Check out the little dai pai dongs around the campus perimeter. They're often tucked away on side streets and are way cheaper than the places closer to the main gates. Look for places with lots of locals – that's usually a good sign. Avoid anything with pictures of food on the menu; those are often geared towards tourists. You’ll find some seriously good and cheap noodles, rice dishes, and local snacks that way. Also, the food courts in the nearby shopping malls are surprisingly good and often cheaper than restaurants. Don't be afraid to venture a bit further from the PolyU main campus; sometimes the best finds are a short MTR ride away.

That's awesome advice! I hadn't thought about the dai pai dongs – totally gonna check those out. Thanks for the tip about the food court in the malls too, I usually just stick to campus. A short MTR ride isn't a big deal, I'm always up for exploring. Avoiding the picture menus is smart – makes perfect sense. So many times those tourist traps are a total rip-off.

The curry! Seriously, the curry at PolyU is unmatched. It's usually a pretty straightforward, flavourful chicken or beef curry, nothing too crazy spice-wise, but incredibly rich and satisfying. Perfect for a hefty appetite. You won't be disappointed. Get extra rice. You'll need it.
