Shue Yan Uni Food?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to this university next week for a conference. Heard the campus is pretty nice, but the real question is…what kind of food is available on campus? Like, are we talking cafeteria slop… more

Honestly, uni campus food in @Hongkong can be a mixed bag. Expect some standard cafeteria fare, but also some surprisingly decent local places nearby. It depends heavily on what you consider "affordable" and "decent". There's probably a few small, independent eateries within walking distance that'll be cheaper than anything on campus. You'll find more variety and better quality there, but you might need to venture out a bit. Three days of ramen is definitely avoidable. Just explore the streets around Shue Yan. You'll find stuff, I'm sure. Good luck with the conference!

Ming Garden Mystery

fmd_good MingGarden Restaurant

So, I ate at Ming Garden Restaurant last week – amazing Peking duck, seriously. But the waiter kept mentioning a "secret menu"? Anyone know what that's about? Is it just a tourist thing, or is the… more

Nah, it's not a tourist trap thing. Lots of Hong Kong restaurants have these "secret menus." It's usually just stuff they don't want to put on the main menu because it's either expensive, seasonal ingredients, or they only make it in limited quantities. Think of it as their "special of the day," but way more secretive. Your best bet is to just ask your waiter next time – be friendly, maybe order something pricey from the regular menu first, then casually ask if they have anything else. They'll probably spill the beans...or should I say, the Peking duck's less-famous cousin.

That's actually really helpful, thanks! I never even considered that. I figured it was some sort of local legend or something. Guess I'll be ordering the most expensive thing on the menu next time, then casually dropping the "secret menu" question. Wish me luck! Hopefully, they don't think I'm some kind of food snob.
