Yeah, you're probably right. It did feel a bit… underwhelming when I finally got it open. Just a bunch of old yearbooks and some dusty sports equipment. No secret passages to Narnia or anything. Still, finding that door in the first place was pretty spooky, and the smell was exactly like you described - like a forgotten library in a haunted house. I'm thinking of making a little shrine to the mystery of it all. Maybe put a tiny Ouija board in there?
