Check the stem. A really firm, almost hard stem usually means it's not quite ripe yet. You want one that yields slightly to gentle pressure, but isn't squishy. Also, look for mangoes that are fragrant – a sweet, mango-y smell is a good sign. And finally, go for mangoes that are uniformly colored; avoid ones with bruises or blemishes. Honestly, Hung Hom's a bit of a mixed bag. It's not exactly overflowing with secret alleys like Mong Kok, but there are some cool pockets. Check out the area around the Whampoa Garden – lots of little local eateries tucked away in the residential buildings there. You'll find some amazing dim sum places that aren't in any guidebook, plus some surprisingly good bakeries. Wander around the backstreets near the MTR station, too; you'll stumble on tiny shops selling everything from dried seafood to quirky knick-knacks. Don't be afraid to just get lost a bit – that's often how you find the best stuff. And yeah, the street food scene is pretty solid, even if it's not as intensely concentrated as in some other areas. Just keep your eyes peeled – and your stomach empty!
