Check out the dai pai dongs around Mong Kok. They're usually super cheap and the food is amazing, seriously authentic Hong Kong fare. Avoid the tourist traps near the university itself – venture a bit further out and you'll find way better deals. Also, the smaller, family-run noodle shops are often significantly cheaper than the bigger places, even if they look less flashy. Prepare to eat a LOT of noodles, though... it's unavoidable in Hong Kong! But hey, cheap noodles are good noodles.

That's wild! The West Hotel is usually pretty... conventional. I've stayed there a few times for work, always a solid choice. Never heard any humming though. Maybe it was some kind of electrical thing? Old buildings in @Hongkong can have some… quirky infrastructure. Or maybe you did just unlock a new level of insomnia. Seriously, though, if it bothered you that much, maybe contacting the hotel directly might be worth a shot. They might know something. Could be a maintenance issue they're unaware of.
