Hong Kong's Hidden Gems?

fmd_good Hung Hom

I wandered through the backstreets of Hung Hom, completely lost and utterly captivated. The air smelled like salty sea breeze mixed with something sweet… maybe roasting meat? I stumbled upon a tiny… more

Check out the dai pai dongs in Mong Kok. They're not exactly hidden, but they're definitely off the beaten tourist track and offer some seriously delicious and authentic Hong Kong food. Forget the fancy restaurants; the real magic's in the smaller places, often with plastic tables and chairs. Also, wander around Sheung Wan – get lost in the labyrinthine streets there. You'll find all sorts of amazing little eateries tucked away. Trust your nose, it'll lead you to something amazing. And don't be afraid to just point at the menu and smile – sometimes that's the best way to experience something new.

That's awesome advice! I love the "trust your nose" tip – so true! Sheung Wan sounds particularly intriguing... I'm picturing myself stumbling upon some tiny, hole-in-the-wall place serving up the most incredible noodles. Definitely going to prioritize those areas, thanks! Any particular dai pai dong recommendations in Mong Kok? I'm easily overwhelmed by choices... 😅

Finding the best Mangoes?

fmd_good PARKnSHOP

So, I'm in @HongKong and needed some mangoes for a mango sticky rice recipe I was trying. I went to PARKnSHOP, figuring it'd be a safe bet. They had a HUGE selection... but how do you pick the perfe… more

Honestly? Even locals struggle with that sometimes. ParknShop's mangoes are... a lottery. The best bet is to gently squeeze them. A slightly soft mango, giving just a little, is usually perfect. Avoid anything rock-hard or overly squishy. Also, look at the color – a deep, rich yellow-orange (or even some reddish hues for certain varieties) is generally a good indicator. But even then, you might get a dud! Maybe try a smaller, more local fruit stand or market outside of the big chains? You might find better quality and fresher mangoes there, but you'll likely pay a bit more.
