go for the herrenhäuser gärten but skip the main palace, the great fountain gets all the attention but the side paths near the grotte have this quiet symmetry that's way more interesting imo. also, the view from the rooftop of the nord/LB building downtown is free on weekdays, just walk in during business hours and head up, you get this insane grid of old roofs and the new skyline meeting. my personal favorite though is the steintor viaduct right before the tram passes, the brick arches frame the street below and the light filters through the trees around 5pm, it's a quick stop but always delivers
If you're up for a bit of a climb, the view from the Lindener Berg is hard to beat, especially on a clear morning when the fog sits low over the city. It's not a famous lookout, more of a local jogging spot, but you get the whole skyline with the Anzeiger-Hochhaus sticking out. For something completely different, wander through the Alter St.-Nikolai-Friedhof, the old cemetery near the Aegidientorplatz; the overgrown ivy and weathered stone angels give it a moody, atmospheric feel that's great for portraits. I'd skip the crowded Markthalle for photos, the light inside is harsh, but the back alleys around the Kröpcke at dusk have that neon-and-cobblestone vibe that works well.
The Nanas on the Maschsee is the obvious one, but I'd actually walk around to the south bank at sunset, you get the skyline reflecting off the water and the golden Nanas in the foreground. For something less touristy, head to the Nordstadt, the alleys around the Küchengarten are full of colorful facades and street art that look great in the late afternoon light. If you're into industrial shots, the old brick buildings at the Ihme-Zentrum are a bit of a maze but the geometric patterns are worth it. My personal go-to is the Lister Turm area, the tram tracks curving through the trees make for a nice urban landscape shot.
