Affinity/Interest Groups in Berlin?

I am a woman (of Asian descent) from the USA, early 20s, queer, are there any affinity groups based on ethnicity, sexaulity, etc. ? I only have basic levels of German skills at the moment (but will be learning more) so there is also that to consider. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or if you're also looking for friends! :) Thanks.

You'll find Berlin pretty welcoming for this. Check out the Quarteera meetups, they're a Russian-speaking queer group but many events are in English or mixed language. For Asian diaspora spaces, Asian Berlin on Instagram posts about community dinners and workshops that are very beginner-German friendly.

Neukolln and Friedrichshain have a bunch of Kiezclubs where people just hang out and play cards or board games in the evenings, no German required. The Monte Rosa cafe in Neukolln does a weekly queer speed-friending event that's good for meeting people without the bar scene pressure. Your German level won't be a big issue, most locals under 40 speak English well and will switch if you're struggling.

If you're into sports at all, check out Berliner Turn- und Freizeitsportverein or Vogelfrei, they're queer-friendly sports clubs that have everything from volleyball to hiking groups. Most sessions are a mix of German and English, and it's a solid way to meet people without the pressure of small talk. Also, the bipoc*berlin Instagram account posts about casual meetups like picnics and book swaps that are very open to newcomers.

honestly the queer scene here is super decentralized but that works in your favor. check out Silver Future in Neukolln for their monthly "lesbian night" called Lesbian Friday, it's pretty low-key and people are happy to chat in English. also Möbel Olfe in Kreuzberg is a classic queer bar where the crowd skews younger and more international, just be prepared for it to get crowded on weekends

for Asian-specific stuff there's a group called diaspora*lab that runs workshops and discussions, mostly in English. they post events on instagram and it's less about partying more about actual conversation. also the BIPoC queer meetup at the Schwules Museum happens every few months, worth keeping an eye on their calendar

one thing nobody mentions is that the Volkshochschule language courses are actually decent for meeting people too, the afternoon intensive ones have a lot of other expats and queer folks in your age range. way cheaper than the private schools and the vibe is more community-oriented

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
