Is Schufa legit?

Tri… I was convinced for the past couple of days that I read somewhere about a new law that forbids landlords from asking for your Schufa. Just talked about it to my date but she doesn't know about it. Tried googleing it but couldn't t find anything. I've had some pretty vivid dreams recently. Was it just wishful thinking and I made it up during a dream? Going crazy...

nope, schufa is still very much alive and well in berlin. if anything i feel like landlords have gotten more aggressive about it since the housing market got tighter. what you might be thinking of is that since 2021 or so they can't charge you for the schufa check anymore, that used to be a thing where they'd bill you 15-20 euro for "processing" it. but they still want to see the document itself, especially the bonitätsauskunft which costs you like 30 euro at the post office. if you're applying in popular spots like prenzlauer berg or kreuzberg just assume you'll need one

The Schufa system is a bit of a grey area legally but in practice it's still standard. What you might be mixing up is the new EU-wide GDPR-ish rules about credit scoring transparency, which don't really stop landlords from asking but do mean Schufa has to explain how they calculate your score if you request it. I'd just pull your free annual Schufa report online, it takes five minutes and you'll see exactly what they have on you. Saves the 30 euro fee and gives you something to hand over without paying for their premium service.

yeah schufa is definitely still a thing here, no law changed that. that ruling some people reference just clarified landlords need a legit reason to ask, but they always find one tbh. if you're applying for apartments in neukölln or wedding they'll basically laugh if you refuse to give it. your best bet is to just get the free schufa bonitätscheck once a year, it's enough for most landlords and saves you from paying the 30€ every time

Best tattoo artist in town?

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
