Should I get a private or public health insurance?

I'm an undergrad student I'm an undergrad student

private can look tempting if you're under 25 and healthy, some plans start around 80€ but the catch is they don't cover your partner or future kids for free like public does. if you ever plan to stay in germany long-term or work a normal job after uni, public insurance is just less of a headache down the line. the student health insurance certificate you need for enrollment also comes way faster from TK or AOK than dealing with a private broker

Public insurance is basically mandatory for undergrads anyway unless you're over 30 or earning above a certain threshold. The student tariff with TK or AOK is around 120 euros and includes things like the semester ticket for BVG, which alone saves you about 200 euros a term. Private might seem cheaper but you'd lose that ticket and have to pay upfront for doctor visits then claim reimbursement, which is a pain when you're on a student budget near Warschauer or in Neukölln.

if you're an undergrad here, public is the way to go. private might seem tempting but the student rate for public is fixed at like 120€ and that's a deal. the real kicker is that private insurers can hike your premiums later or deny coverage for stuff like therapy or pre-existing conditions, which is common in berlin. plus if you ever want to switch back to public after graduating, they can make you pay a ton or just say no

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
