Sirene? Was los?

Kann mich nicht erinnern mal eine gehört zu haben Kann mich nicht erinnern mal eine gehört zu haben

The sirens you'd actually hear in daily life are the ones on fire trucks and ambulances, not the big rooftop ones. Those rooftop units sit on fire stations and a few public buildings, and there are only around 150 of them left in the whole city, which is why most people never register them. During the Cold War there were hundreds more, and the whole system got scaled back after 1990. What you might catch is the Feuerwehr using the smaller electronic horns when there's a major incident, like a gas leak or a big fire where they need people to clear the area.

honestly if u were around in summer 2023 you mightve heard the Warntag test on sept 14. that one actually went off properly for once. in most of Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte you basically never hear the rooftop ones on a normal day, theyre mostly for Katastrophenschutz stuff like floods or a big chemical thing, not random tuesday noise

Berlin's sirens get tested every second Wednesday of the month around noon, but they only run the full nationwide Warntag once a year, usually in September. If you live in the quieter outer districts like Zehlendorf or Köpenick you might genuinely never hear one because the coverage is patchy out there. The real alert system most people actually notice is Nina, the warning app, plus the cell broadcast that hits your phone directly.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
