I've been here 12 years and I'm not leaving, but I'm definitely more anxious than I used to be. The thing that gets me is how normalized some of the rhetoric has become in everyday conversation, not just in politics. I live in Neukolln and even here I've had strangers make comments to me on the U-Bahn that would have been unthinkable five years ago. But leaving means starting from zero somewhere else, and I'm not convinced any European country is actually better positioned on this stuff long term.

not planning to leave but i've definitely started doing the mental math of where i'd go if i had to, which i never did before 2023. what gets me is how many germans i know will say "afd is just protest votes" while ignoring that their local cdu councilor is cosigning the same talking points. if you're in berlin and worried, join a tenant union or a nachbarschaftshaus group, it helps to see the other side of the city that isn't online doomscrolling

I moved here from India six years ago and the thought has crossed my mind, but less because of the AfD and more because of how long it takes to feel like you actually belong. You can have a permanent job, pay taxes for years, speak decent German, and still get treated like a temporary guest at the Burgeramt or when you try to rent a proper apartment. The political shift is unsettling, sure, but what wears me down more is the daily friction of being seen as an outsider even when I've done everything "right." I know people who left for Canada or the Netherlands and they describe a lightness that I recognize I'm missing here.

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
