Hello. How would one go about becoming a tour guide in Berlin? Been here over a year now, and looking for a more fulfilling career.

Friends of mine have said I'd be good at it. What would be the top companies to send an application? Friends of mine have said I'd be good at it. What would be the top companies to send an application?

Honestly, the license thing is real but don't let it scare you off. The IHK course is like 400 bucks and a few weekends, nothing crazy. I know a guy who just started doing free "pay what you want" tours near the Brandenburger Tor without any papers and built up a following on Instagram before going legit.

For companies, check out Berlin on Bike. They do bike tours which are way more fun than walking in my opinion, and theyre always looking for people who know the neighborhoods like Kreuzberg or Neukölln. You dont need a license to start with them since its more about the vibe than spouting dates. Also, fwiw, avoid the big bus companies like BEX or Berlin City Tour, they treat guides like interchangeable parts and the pay is trash.

The first thing you need is a valid tour guide license (Gästeführer-Schein) from the Berlin Senate. It's not mandatory for all tours, but most reputable companies and the Brandenburg Gate area require it. You can get the license by taking a course through IHK Berlin or a private school like Berliner Stadterkundung, which runs a few months part-time.

For companies, don't overlook the smaller niche operators like Brewer's Tours or Berlin Underground. They're more open to hiring guides with specific interests rather than just general history, and they pay better than the bus company mass tours. The bigger names like Original Berlin Walks or Insider Tour are fine but you'll start as a freelancer and need to prove yourself before getting consistent work.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
