Lately, I've seen many threads or comments in which people post seemingly nonchalant comments loaded with racial bias that receive massive amounts of upvotes.

Just a few hours ago, someone talked about the reduction of voting age as something positive and the most upvoted comment mentions "broccoli haircuts", obviously referring to curly hair. A few days ago, the same pattern could be seen when talking about anything related to Neukölln or Wedding or NYE.

I thankfully don't see this kind of things in my offline life, so my question is: is Berlin becoming more racist or just this reddit forum?

the real answer is that online spaces just attract different people. go to the späti on sonnenallee and you'll hear five languages in ten minutes, nobody cares what your hair looks like. reddit tends to draw a certain crowd that might not even live here, or if they do they're bitter about something specific.

berlin's problems are real, housing costs, bureaucracy, the s-bahn constantly on fire. but the casual racism you see on here is a reddit thing, not a berlin thing. the city's too big and too mixed for that to be the dominant vibe offline.

if you want to actually gauge the mood, go sit at a park in kreuzberg on a sunny saturday. you'll see what i mean.

It's mostly this subreddit. Berlin has a long history of migration and working class struggle that online spaces just don't capture. I've lived in Wedding for six years and my street is full of families from Turkey, Syria, and Vietnam all hanging out together at the playground. The keyboard warriors aren't the ones buying vegetables at the weekly market on Leopoldplatz.

I think Reddit just amplifies the worst takes because people upvote edgy stuff for laughs, not because they actually believe it. Offline, Berlin's still pretty much the same messy, diverse city it's always been, at least from what I see day to day.
