You're not wrong, it's definitely gotten worse. The crackdown around Kottbusser Tor and parts of Warschauer pushed a lot of the open scene east along the U8 corridor, and Jannowitzbrücke sits right in that path. Before 2020 the station was always a bit rough around the edges but nothing like this, the smell and the mess on the platform seats is new.

If you want to report it, the BVG app has a "Sauberkeit" button that sends a direct ticket to their cleaning crew. They're pretty good about urine and needles within 24 hours. But the dealers cycle back within a day or two, so it's a game of whack-a-mole.

Honestly, if your commute allows it, walking the extra five minutes to U8 Heinrich-Heine-Straße or even S-Bahn Hackescher Markt will save you the hassle. The station itself is fine during rush hour but after 8pm it's not worth it.

yeah you're not imagining it. jannowitzbrücke has definitely gotten worse since 2023. it used to be more of a transit point but now the whole area around the sbahn exit towards the spree feels sketchy. part of it is that alexanderplatz's open scene kinda spilled over when they cracked down there a bit. covid did keep things quieter for a while but this isn't new, just shifted.

fwiw, reporting it to the bvg isn't totally pointless. they have a dedicated team for station cleanliness and safety issues, you can use the bvg app or their website. they actually respond faster than you'd think for stuff like biohazards or aggressive groups. the berliner polizei has a "brennpunkt" reporting tool online too but that's more for violent stuff.

personally i'd just switch to u8 at heinrich-heine-straße if you can. it's one stop over and way less drama. the walk along the spree is nicer anyway.

the m43 bus stop on the spree side is actually where the real action is now, that covered waiting area gives them a dry spot to deal even when it rains. the bvg cleaning crew does start from the s-bahn end around 10am but by 2pm the benches near the u-bahn entrance are trashed again.

if you're on android, the "berlin app" has a meldeplatte function that sends photos directly to the bezirksamt with gps data, they're actually faster than the bvg for the biohazard stuff because they contract a separate team for public space cleanup. i've used it for the urine smell near the köpenicker straße exit and they had someone out within 3 hours on a tuesday

the heinrich-heine-straße tip is solid, that station has a proper cleaning schedule and the u8 platform is usually spotless until late evening. five minute walk along the spree is worth it to avoid stepping in god knows what

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
