Hi all!

I'm going to travel at the end of the month and plan to renew my passport while back home.

The thing is, at the moment my blue card references my current passport number & not the one I will have upon renewal. Will I have trouble coming back if I have both the new passport, old passport and blue card? (I will ofcourse transfer the blue card upon return).

I tried to find information regarding this but was not able to. Any info. Would be really appreciated!

PS. Apologies if this isn't the right sub to post this I just didn't know where else to ask.

Thanks in advance :)

ive done this a few times myself, no issues at all. the thing is the blue card's chip stores your biometrics not the passport number, so border control scanners just verify it's you. at berlin brandenburg they'll flip through both passports and wave you through in like 30 seconds

one tip nobody mentioned - when you land back at schönefeld or tegel (whichever terminal they route you to), use the automated e-gates if your new passport has the chip. saves you the awkward conversation with the officer. just scan both passports and the card at the machine

for the burgeramt update, skip the online booking stress and just go to the one in schöneberg at 7am. they keep like 20 walk-in slots per day for residence permit stuff. i got mine done in 15 minutes there last month, no appointment needed

You should be fine traveling with both passports. The border officers at Berlin Brandenburg are pretty used to seeing people with multiple documents, especially with the blue card. Just keep them all together in your carry-on so you can hand them over at once if they ask.

One thing nobody mentioned yet - when you update your blue card at the Burgeramt, bring the old passport with you even if it's expired. They sometimes want to see the entry stamp that matches your original application. I learned that the hard way and had to go back a second time.

yeah you'll be fine, just carry both passports with you when you travel back. the blue card is tied to your person not the document number technically, and border control is used to people with multiple passports. when you get back to berlin just book an appointment at the burgeramt to get the card updated, though fair warning the wait times at places like bürgeramt mitte or pankow can be 6-8 weeks out so book asap

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
