We've been playing firework sounds since we got him to get him used to it, but he's still freaking out at the loud blasts. Any tips from experienced dog owners on how to get through the night?

Happy New Year's to y'all!

It's definitely a tough night for a lot of dogs, not just puppies. Something that helped us was giving our guy something to do with his mouth, like a frozen kong or a bully stick, the chewing seems to distract them from the noise.

The first NYE with a dog is always rough, don't worry. A big thing is that you can't really desensitize a puppy to the actual physical pressure and vibration of the blasts, which is what really spooks them. Try putting him in the bathroom or a windowless room with the radio on loud, a lot of people swear by that for the worst hours between midnight and 1. If you have a car, some dogs feel safer in there since it muffles the sound and blocks the flashes, just make sure it's not too cold.

Our dog was a disaster her first NYE in Berlin too, so you're not alone. One thing that helped us was taking her for a long, tiring walk around Treptower Park earlier in the evening before the real chaos started, and then giving her a frozen Kong filled with peanut butter around 11:30 to keep her occupied through midnight. The chewing and licking seemed to calm her down more than anything else.

Best tattoo artist in town?

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
