Hi!

Does anyone have experience using the Deutschlandticket to travel from Köln to Berlin?

I live in Paris but all the night trains are booked or there's a bug on the website, it's not clear, and the other trains are crazy expensive, so I thought of getting to Köln and sort of hop my way to Berlin from there.

What do you think? Is it doable?

Thanks :)

honestly the köln to berlin run is doable but it's a slog. i'd break it up in hannover instead of warburg, the connection is a bit smoother and the hbf there has better food options if u get hungry. the RE from köln to hannover takes about 3.5 hours then you grab the RE to berlin for another 3ish hours. just check the DB app for the exact RE numbers cause some go to stendal first which adds time.

one thing nobody mentioned - the deutschlandticket is a subscription so cancel it after your trip or it'll auto-renew. also if you're starting from paris, consider taking the flixbus to köln instead, it's usually cheaper than the TGV and drops you right at the hbf too

yeah it's totally doable but it'll take you like 9-10 hours with regional trains. you'd go from köln to hamm or warburg first, then change to the RE to berlin. the RE7 goes direct from köln to warburg, then you switch to the RE11 or RE13 that runs east. no flexing on the deutschlandticket, so you're stuck with whatever regional schedule they have. bring snacks and a book, the seats are fine but wifi can be spotty. i'd avoid the late afternoon connections cause they get packed around ruhrgebiet

fair warning the regional train layout means you'll probably have to switch platforms at some random station in the middle of nowhere, like warburg or hamm, and those platforms can be pretty tight during rush hour. also double check if ur ticket covers the flixbus if u bail on the train

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
